New York City - House remake

I found this Tabou Combo remix online... a remix from 2007 on 12” vinyl.

Casamence vs Tabou Combo - New York City*
1 - New York City (Original Extended Mix) 6:34
2 - New York City (Original Edit) 2:44
3 - New York City (Jeremy Hills Remix) 5:56

There is no more konpa in it. Just the Hills mix has for some seconds a little cymbal.
Could be easy added some compas groove.

«New York City» 1979 en Panama,
I like the hard sound setting and their disco dancing... 0:)

They certainly sucked the compas right out of those remixes. I like the concept, if they can do it with American oldies, why not Haitian compas oldies.

I'm with you, Jean-Luc because that is some serious funky compas Tabou is laying down right there. It's no wonder that Tabou captured the ears and hearts of the Panamanian people.

I wonder if anyone will ever uplopad the footage of Tabou & Wilfido Vargas jamming together on stage

12/13/2009 - 21:52 -

Did that happen?
It remembers me their obscure “Gozalo” album with Magda Lake on Kubeney.

Of course it happened, did you think I was just typing just to type, Laughing out loud. I once saw a small blurry clip of it on youtube in someones montage.

Caribbean Combination

Wilfrido Vargas's group and Tabou Combo, the Ritz, 254 West 54th Street (541-8900). A battle of the bands to dream about, this show combines two of the best Caribbean groups: Wilfrido Vargas's band, from the Dominican Republic, and Tabou Combo, from Haiti. Mr. Vargas is high in the royalty of merengue, a music with the fastest horn orchestrations man has ever devised. Tabou Combo's members, longtime residents of New York, play compas, a guitar-driven dance music that lasts all night but seems over in a second. Neither is likely to concede defeat, and both are dance-hall transcendentalists. The show starts tonight at 11; tickets are $20.50.

Wilfrido Vargas sample Tabou a few times on his albums.

Here is Wilfrido Vargas: "El Jardinero" is a combination of "Barrier" of DP Express and Tabou Combo

Here's another cover that I stumbled upon a few months ago.

Marcos Caminero - Tu Hombre*

This is a good example of what they call merengue clasico. The singer sounds as he copies Sergio Vargas. I'm surprised about the tone of the trumpet and trombone - it tries to get some impulsive flavor of Frères Déjean or something similar, very unusual in merengue.
